The twenty-seventh annual conference of the Society of Dance History
Scholars, entitled "Celebrating Dance: Celebrating History," will
be hosted by the Duke University
Dance Department at Duke University
in Durham, North Carolina.

Conference Schedule. The Programming Committee, chaired by Amy
Koritz and Janice Ross, has made its selections of participants for the
2004 conference. The final conference schedule is now available online,
posted here.
Conference Registration. On-line registration is not yet possible
for the conference itself. If you need information immediately, contact

out and return it to the SDHS office.

Travel Directions. Durham is readily accessible by air and roadway.
- By Air. US Airways will be the official airlines of
the conference, and offers conferees a fare discount of 7-12% on flights
with US Airways, US Airways Express, US Airways Shuttle and select US
Airways Codeshare (United Airlines) flights between June 10 - 19, 2004.
Conferees should telephone the Group and Meeting Reservation Office
at 877.874-7687 and refer to Gold File Number 86182884. Be sure to specify
the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Discounts are greatest for
those booking early, so sooner is better than later.
- Taxi from Airport. Arrangements have been made for reduced
travel from the RDU airport to the Duke East Campus/Downtown Durham
area. Please contact Mr. Naeem Masseih, Operation Manager of Airport
Access Taxi, at (919) 960 6161 or (919) 818 3621. The set cost for transportation
shall be: One passenger, $16.00; Two Passengers "each" $ 9.00;
Three passengers "each" $ 7.50; Four passengers "each"
$ 6.50. Reservations should be made by conferees at least 24 hours in
advance.
- By Roadway. Duke University is located in historic Durham,
North Carolina. Driving to Durham:-Via 1-85 North: Exit onto N.C. 147
(Durham Freeway).
-Via I-85 South: In Durham, take the left-lane exit (#174B) for U.S.
15-501 South Bypass - Duke University/Chapel Hill. Continue on U.S.
15-501 to N.C. 147 (Durham Freeway) exit.
Driving directions to central campus are located here.
Parking permits (good for all campus lots) will be available with a
total of $5:00 charge for the entire week of the SDHS conference. Please
contact Duke University Parking and Transportation in advance at (919)-684-7275.
Accommodations. The conference hotel shall be the
Durham
Marriott at the Civic Center, 201 Foster Street, Durham NC 27701
(919.768-6000). Special conference rates for hotel accommodation are
available for all participants and accompanying persons. To receive
the conference rate of $89 USD for a double room, be sure to refer
to the "SDHS Annual Conference" when making reservations.
Dormitory accommodations will also be available on the Duke University
campus from Thurs, June 17 through Sunday June 20th. Earliest checking
in time for Dorms is Thursday, June 17 at 3:00 pm. Attendees may check
out on Sunday, June 20th by 1:00 pm. The rates for a Single room will
be $ 26.30 per night; double rooms $20.45. Dormitory residents may
bring linen, or request linen with a one-time additional charge for
$25.00. Double rooms may also be shared with others.
Other accommodations: We have also reserved 40 additional rooms with
Courtyard by Marriott at the same discounted rate ($89.00 per double
room).

Scholars" when making a reservation. Both hotels are located
at 5 mins. drive to/from Duke East campus. Courtyard by Marriott,

If you dont mind staying a little further away from campus (10 min.
drive), you might consider Homestead Suites ($ 49+tax per night).
This is a special discount rate for Duke guests so please indicate
that you are a guest for Duke University Dance Program when making
a reservation. They also have a shuttle van service (for free) which
will take hotel guests back and forth from Duke campus to the hotel
(but inquire with them and make sure. They may not operate the van
on Sat & Sun). This option included an air-conditioned, furnished
bed room with a queen/king size bed, telephone, a small kitchenette
on the side of the room with a stove, dishes, pots and pans (a grocery
store is located at walking distance across from Homestead Suites),

Food and Drink. There are several restaurants and bars in
the university complex. Durham restaurants offer a wide variety of
international and
domestic cuisines. Many high quality establishments are located in
the Ninth Street area near Duke University East Campus. Campus fare
is available from Duke University Dining Services and affiliated merchants.
Additional options are located in nearby Chapel Hill.
Area Attractions. Duke University is located in the heart
of historic Durham, North Carolina. The city is host to the technological
resources of the Research Triangle Park and lies amid the vibrant
Carolina Piedmont. Durham boasts fine food and entertainment as well
as strong cultural traditions. Durham Attractions include: Bennett
Place State Historic Site; Brightleaf District; Carolina Theater;
Duke Homestead State Historic Site and Tobacco Museum; Durham Arts
Center; Eno River State Park; Hayti Heritage Center; Historic Stagville;
Historic Durham Athletic Park; Ninth Street; North Carolina Central
University; Southpoint Area. Duke University Campus also offers recreational
opportunities, including: Duke Chapel; Duke Forest; Duke Primate Center;
Duke University Museum of Art; Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Participants
may also enjoy pre/post conference visits to other North Carolina
attractions: Blue Ridge Parkway; Chapel Hill and the University of
North Carolina; Downtown Charlotte; Great Smoky Mountains National
Park; Historic Asheville; North Carolina Outer Banks; Raleigh Downtown
